Coronado Public Boat Dock Demolished

New concrete pilings and floating dock to be installed in February.

CORONADO - The deteriorating public boat dock located near Peohe's restaurant in the Ferry Landing Market Place, which was closed to boaters in 2006, was demolished Dec. 14. And a replacement is coming soon, according to the Port of San Diego.

For months, readers have been calling The Log to ask about the dock, which has been sitting idle since its closure for repairs last year.

"The components for the new dock will begin arriving in February (2008)," said Marguerite Elicone, senior public relations specialist for the Port of San Diego.

Black Belt Jones in Coronado

Not sure if you knew this or not, but Black Belt Jones (aka Jim Kelly) resides in Coronado. You may remember him from this clip (warning, contains some violence).

Jim is a tennis pro at the Coronado Bay Club by Ferry Landing.

I've met him on a few occasions and he is a great guy and amazing athlete. Not to mention, a talented actor...check him out on IMDB.

Whatever Floats Your Tank: the USN's Improved Navy Lighterage System

Lighterage is about loading or unloading ships using lighters (barges) that can form a sort of ad-hoc ramp or shuttle from ships at anchor; they are often used when a port's dockside is too shallow for the ship, or dockside berths are unavailable. These modules greatly expand landing options for well-equipped militaries, and may be versatile enough to be used in sea-based transfers as well; yet lighterage is one of those quiet enablers that rarely receives the attention it merits.

Marinette Marine Corp. in Marinette, WI has won a firm-fixed-price contract (N00025-03-C-0002) for the manufacture of the new Improved Navy Lighterage System, including both powered and non-powered modules. The total contract could rise to $404.8 million if all options are exercised. The systems will be delivered at Naval Amphibious Construction Battalion One in Coronado, CA; Naval Amphibious Construction Battalion Two in Little Creek, Norfolk, VA; the Expeditionary Warfare Training Group Pacific; and Blount Island Command in Jacksonville, FL.

Navy comes to aid of girl in distress on cruise ship

SAN DIEGO -- Fourteen-year-old Laura Montero was aboard a cruise ship off Baja California late last week when her appendix ruptured, causing her agonizing pain.

The Dawn Princess was out at sea. The ship doctor lacked the anesthesia for an appendectomy.

The teenager from rural Illinois had been enjoying a vacation with 15 members of her family. Now Laura's mother, Trudy Lafield, began to worry that their long-awaited holiday idyll on the Mexican Riviera would prove fatal.

Then, 550 miles away, the aircraft carrier Ronald Reagan, on a training mission in preparation for deployment to the Persian Gulf, answered a distress call.

High surf expected in Southern California

Get ready for a weather roller coaster. The Santa Anas make a return today, large ocean surf with possible 14-foot breakers is expected through Wednesday and heavy rain is forecast to arrive Thursday.

"We're going to have the best of ocean swells for the year coming into Southern California and the biggest rain of the season, plus a fire weather watch because of offshore winds," said Stuart Seto, a weather specialist for the National Weather Service.
