PRESS RELEASE:
Many readers don’t realize that The Wonderful Wizard of Oz was the first of 14 Oz books by Baum. This lecture summarizes the first three books and traces Baum’s many jobs and travels from New York to Dakota Territory, to Hollywood in the days of silent movies. Find out why Oz books have been banned from schools and libraries since the start of the series. Slides feature historical photos, Oz illustrations and photos of the Hotel del Coronado where L. Frank Baum wrote several Oz books.
Our guest lecturer will be Angelica Carpenter, Curator of the Arne Nixon Center for the Study of Children’s Literature at California State University, Fresno, co-author of four illustrated biographies for young people, and president of the International Wizard of Oz Club.
Her slide illustrated talk will be held on Thursday, March 5, at 7 p.m. in the Lecture Hall at the Coronado Historical Association. The registration fee is $10 for CHA members, $15 for non-members. Please call the CHA Office for registration, 619-435-7242, or send your check to CHA, 1100 Orange Ave., Coronado, CA, 92118.
