Navy OKs additional carrier berth

SAN DIEGO — The Navy has approved plans to upgrade a berth to accommodate a third nuclear-powered Nimitz-class aircraft carrier, officials announced Friday.

The record of decision signed Jan. 30 by Assistant Navy Secretary B.J. Penn opens the door to bring Carl Vinson to North Island Naval Air Station in Coronado, Calif., as its homeport. It will join the existing carriers based here, Nimitz and Ronald Reagan.

Plans call for upgrading Lima berth, a mooring that has accommodated carriers and other ships transiting through San Diego, so it can support the Nimitz-class ships. The project includes upgraded fenders and mooring bollards as well as improvements to utilities, security and information systems.

The project won’t require additional dredging.

“After considering comments from regulators and the public, the Navy concluded the environmental consequences of the upgrades were not significant,” officials said in the decision announcement.
