Permit to alter mansion denied

CORONADO — The Coronado City Council has rejected a request to alter the 101-year-old oceanfront estate built for sugar tycoon John D. Spreckels, agreeing with preservationists that many of the modern changes are inappropriate.

The 12,751-square-foot estate, which sits across from the beach, was sold in March 2007 for $12.8 million. The home, built in 1908, was designed by notable architect Harrison Albright and features a main house, two rear apartments and a six-car garage. It is a state-designated historic landmark.

Owner Jonah Shacknai wanted to make some changes to the Spreckels Mansion, as it is known, including replacing several large, original windows with French doors, adding a 700-square-foot master bedroom above one of the conservatories and installing a hydraulic roof.
